a photographer's journey ...

On June 9th, I took a trip. A trip that was a milestone of sorts in several ways. I met several ladies about 5 years ago in a group online. A group of ladies that shared one major thing in common with me. A LOVE of photography. Sure, we had many other things in common, mainly we were all moms (as we met on Cafemom) , but photography was the glue that bonded us together. Over the years we have listened to each other, now on Facebook, we have guided one another, we have watched each other's families grow, change and been there for each other in times that were sad, times that were happy. We encouraged each other, comforted each other, offered and received advice, this could go on and on. Finally after all of this time, we decided to try to put together a MEET/RETREAT ... Kelley took the reigns with little input from me. She planned and organized a fantastic trip to Jackson Hole, WY. When she posted about it - there was a grand response, but as time grew closer, life happened for some and the group that was confirmed to go grew smaller and smaller. It is hard to get a date and a budget that works for everyone. I had decided long ago that I was gonna make this happen come Hell or High Water for me. I had never gotten the chance in my 1st marriage to do anything for ME. I was going on this trip. I booked my flight for June in March I think , I was instantly excited as soon as I completed that transaction. As I have never flown before, well I take that back, I was only a baby the 1st as the last time I had flown, so NO , I don't remember it at all.
The date grew closer and the confirmed crew going was Niki from CA, Kelley and her daughter, Kayla from ID, and Carolyn with her son Avery from WY... Niki and I were the only one taking to the skies, and realized the day before the trip that we were scheduled for the same flight from Denver to Jackson Hole.
My family was set to drive me to Knoxville to say Goodbye - but that was cancelled due to last min, change for Frankie to work. I was so sad , I wanted my family there to see me off. But I had to do this solo , so on Thursday, June 9th, I set out early AM for Knoxville, the plane was a smaller one which I was surprised by, as the flight from KNOX to Denver was almost 3 hours, on the way I had a window seat , in a single row. I was so glad to not have a "neighbor" - I had to be the biggest nerd on the plane - I was so excited and stared out the window almost the entire flight. It was a good and smooth flight - I was amazed at the beauty of the "patchwork" of land, the fluffy cotton clouds. Sights that I will never forget. Once in Denver I had about an hour to make the next flight, I met up with Niki and we boarded a larger Jet headed to Jackson Hole. Niki convinced a little girl to swap seats with her, so we got to chat the hour and 20 min flight to Jackson Hole. We talked and chatted like the Old Pals that we were, never skipping a beat! Once in Jackson Hole, Kelley and Kayla picked us up at the airport with Dozer, Kayla's sweet playful puppy. The Grand Tetons were right there towering above the land, snow capped and beautiful. We headed back into town to grab a bite to eat before checking into our cabin at Cowboy Village. We got settled in and decided to wait for Carolyn to arrive. Once she arrived with Avery we chatted it up a little longer and decided to head out to see a few sights before Supper. We headed up to the Grand Tetons National Park and found a well photographed place called "The Chapel of Transfiguration" it was cold and rainy the Tetons were not able to be viewed clearly but we still managed to get off several dozen good shots. We saw several Elk and Kayla spotted 2 Elk fighting on tbe ridge. AWESOME! We decided the 1st Full day , Friday would be a perfect day to pack all we could and see all we could see in Yellowstone. THIS was my favorite day. We grabbed some snacks at a local grocery store, and hit the road to Yellowstone. It was an amazing day, we saw the infamous "Old Faithful" erupt, not once but twice, we saw tons of Bison, and Bison calves, the Grand Prismatic Spring (my most fav of all), with all of it's colors of orange, yellow, turquoise, and blue. We saw the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone with a spectacular view of the Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River, the Mud Volcano, Sulphur Cauldrons... Jackson and Yellowstone Lakes, as well as a Frozen Lake - I am thinking it was Jenny Lake? I will have to look that one up again. By the time Nightfall came - we realized it was 9:30pm and we were about 2 hours away from food and our cabin - haha. Not only that, but Carolyn got pulled over not once but twice by the cops for a blown headlight / taillight. She took it like a champ, and got by with only warnings - THANK GOD! Carolyn decided that little Avery had had his share of the trip and headed home on Saturday morning. The rest of us were lazy and hung out at the cabin for awhile before deciding to go shopping around town. We headed out then took a Covered Wagon ride/ dinner / show later that night. We thought it started out Cheesy but met some wonderful people - on the ride and at dinner, I met some "neighbors" from Seven Devils, NC and some other nice folks from CA. Kayla got "engaged" to a mountian man (all part of the show) there was a sweet little Japanese man who sang aloud for "She'll be coming round the mountian", there was a real and LEGIT proposal. It was alot of fun. On Sunday Niki left us to head back to CA. Which left Kelley, Kayla and Dozer and I to fend for ourselves. We drove around a little while but it was a poopy rainy day. So that left us nothing better to do but eat and shop! hahaha ... I had Homemade Wild Huckleberry Ice Cream - for the 1st time and BOY was it YUMMY!!!! We shopped around town and made a reservation at the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar's Steakhouse. It was YUMMY too. After that we planned on getting a drink at the bar and sitting on the saddle barstools ... but we were TOO FULL! We headed back to the cabin, chatted awhile, and hit the sack. The following morning - Monday ... was my time to say farewell to my friends, and Jackson Hole. I hopped a flight at 7am, and headed for home. I chatted with a local from Jackson Hole on the flight to Denver, then the flight home to Knox I chatted it up with a cop from Los Angeles, CA ... gave him the DL on the mountains of East TN. My luggage took a detour thru Chicago and the airport had to hand deliver it to me late Monday night. All in all it was a WONDERFUL trip with a WONDERFUL bunch of ladies. We made lots of memories and shared alot of laughs. I can't wait til the next trip to a new destination and hope that many of the others will get to come along! Thanks Niki, Kelley, Kayla and Carolyn for a few days of fun and friendships that I will cherish forever! Here are a few of my Fav photos.

I miss my dad ....

So I have read all the posts on Facebook about dad ... I am missing mine pretty bad right now. I actually broke down in the car as we pulled into the driveway tonight. A familiar song came on the radio, a song that I had put on a CD for my dad a few years ago, a Cd that I made him for Father's Day and it was one of my favorites. What was the song you ask? Conway Twitty's "That's my Job". Thank God I had Frankie in the car to comfort me. That was the hardest that I had cried over my dad in awhile. I could hardly breathe. By reading this, one would assume that my dad is no longer in my life, that he has passed away... But that is not the case. My dad chooses to not speak to me. He chooses to not speak to his grandchildren, 2 of which he doesn't even know. He chooses to not speak to my granny, his mother, and I think THAT part hurts me more than anything. I think that I could endure the pain, and heartache... for the rest of my life, if he would just talk to Granny once again. You see it has been 2 years since I had a conversation with my dad, and that last conversation was not pleasant, there are parts of that conversation, etched into my memory. It was hurtful, HOWEVER, I can forgive, I am one of the most forgiving people that you would ever meet. I picture in my mind conversations with my dad, I think that we could pick up right where we left off at times. I would hope for that at least. When I went through my divorce my dad stopped talking to me. I hate that I was such a disappointment to him. I am happier, the older boys are happier. My previous marriage was toxic, my current relationship is a complete 360 from my previous. I have a man in my life who LOVES to spend time together as a family, a man who loves to laugh and have fun. I have a man in my life that loves my older children just as much as the twins that we share.
I remember many things about my childhood and growing up. Some of my fondest memories are the summers that I spent on the road with my dad. Dad drove a truck, and as soon as summer break began, I was ready to hit the open road with my dad. The life of the road, listening to bad language on the CB Radio, eating and sometimes showering in the grimy truck stops. Scoring thru the gift shops of said Truck stops. Waking up in the sleeper of the truck (even one had bunk beds) , dad yelling back at me when we were within a mile or so from crossing a state line, seeing distance thunderstorms in the Desert. Seeing the lights of the big cities, Vegas, the skyscrapers, off the course stops at Graceland, Disneyland and everywhere inbetween. IT IS THOSE MOMENTS that I hold the memories in my head and heart.
I text my dad occasionally, I email him. All in hopes for a response. One day - maybe I will break thru that wall he has built. One day I will tear that wall down. One day it will be a fabulous reunion in which it will be like old times, like there was never a pause in our relationship. One day... is what I hope for. Until that one day comes... I will be here on the outside of that wall - chipping away at it with my dull spoon, dropping hints to him via messages, whispering that I am still here. Still waiting , for him to be my daddy again.

Let me Moon you ...

From the time I was a child I have always had a fascination with the moon. It is always so beautiful and mesmerizing. When someone mentions anything spectacular happening like tonight's Super Moon ... I get excited! So hours before nightfall I was getting camera equipment together and thought I cannot tell a huge difference in tonight's moon than any other one - I will take NASA's word for it that it is the closest to Earth than it has ever been in 18+ years! When I first went out to shoot the moon - there was a horrible haze lingering - but as the night grew later the sky cleared and I was able to pick up a great shot! Get out an enjoy the moon more often - it is a beautiful subject!

If I can't go barefoot ... I'll go FiveFingers

So yesterday I made a try to Asheville - which is one of my fav places to go any day of the week. but today I was really stoked because it was a beautiful day - after all the cold SNOW we have had ... 67 degrees and I was getting NEW SHOES! YAY - that is always a plus! I had heard all the hype about Vibram FiveFingers (VFF) and they looked totally like something that was very do-able for me! You see VFF's separate your toes, like those cool toe socks... I had heard if you do not like socks / shoes ... VFF's are for you! One of my Photography mom friends got some and has been posting pics in our group. The more I seen them the more I wanted them ... so the Mast General Store in Ashevile was my shot at getting some!

As soon as I slid my bare piggies into the holes - I was SOLD! They were not lying when it says like walking barefoot - soooooo true. And I love to be barefoot. In the summer the bottoms of my feet are thick and tough like Indian skin. VFF's have a thick rubbery bottom so - me and VFF's went together like peanut butter and jelly!

They are no slip on shoe - it is quite a task to get these bad boys on ... but once they are on - they fit like a glove. The only problem for me right now is - my pinkie toe on my right foot "hides" under the next toe - so it is not liking the "segregation" of the toes! LOL ... but I am getting more and more used to them!
My mom made fun of me - called me a Bigfoot / Sasquatch - I know they are ugly but comfort is the key ... I can deal with ugly ... anyways - I think they are kinda cute!

so there you have it ... I am officially part of the "cool crowd" - here is the peanut butter to my jelly!

and one more

timeless treasures ...

so today I was doing my 365 photos ... and somedays I link the 2 projects together ... other times I don't - but today was a linked kinda day ... I love cameras - old ones, new ones, doesn't matter ... I will buy a camera at a yard sale or flea market in a heartbeat! LOVE THEM! I mentioned to my grandmother about my new found love of collecting cameras and she brought out my Great-Grandmother's old Kodak Brownie Fiesta camera ... and gave it to me, Let me just tell you how this made my life - haha ... well needless to say - this little camera is now ranked with some of my highest possesions - on the priceless list. My "maw" (great-grandmother's nickname) - bought this camera new back in the 60's or early 70's .. it has shot MANY pictures - Oh how I would LOVE to hear the stories it could tell ... it still has a roll of film in it, it is in the original box with the flash - and instructions for picture taking hints! I have seen MANY MANY pictures in my granny's old albums that this little gem has shot! I just had to share this today ... along with my self portrait 365 - will all my treaures. Enjoy!

28/365 - Priceless to me ...

Christmas Countdown 2010

I thought I might share a little project / group I am participating in called Christmas Countdown ... basically we take a photo every day from Dec 1st up until Christmas and post on Flickr, I have tried this in the past as well as a 365 day project, even a weekly project with photography and I have failed miserably ... I want to be more disiplined in this and stick with it ... I think It will also give me a little something to blog about daily - so here goes - I will post all 3 together with this 1st post today ... starting tomorrow I will post once a day ... or that is what I am telling myself anyway.

1/25

The 1st snow of the season actually came on Dec. 1st, what a gift that was. We had our fair share of snow last Winter, but I was thrilled to see the beautiful snow coming down Wednesday morning. I was not suprised at all of the negative remarks on facebook and twitter as people do not deal well with the cold. I do but only because I don't really have to get out in it - nonetheless - Welcome December , welcome hot chocolate and cozy fires in the fireplace ... I have missed you.

2/25

Say hello to the McDonald's Holiday Pie ... they are pretty famous here in Unicoi County - our Editor of the local paper, "The Erwin Record" loves these little pies so so so much that he has went to great lengths to get them BACK in the Tri-Cities area ... and he succeeded! I have to say - I have never had Holiday pie before - and IT WAS FANTASTIC ... like Birthday Cake in a box ... yummm - RUN OUT NOW and get YOURS!!!! But fair warning ... You will be addicted! Don't say that I didn't warn you!

3/25

What else could get one in a better holiday spirit than "It's a Wonderful Life" - nothing - nothing can do it for me quite like George Bailey and Clarence trying to earn his wings. I was lucky enough to go with a good photography friend to Barter Theatre last night to see the play and let me tell you - it was FANTASTIC! We laughed and cried of course. The actors were amazing and it was a great great following of the movie! Barter knows how to do things right!

4/25

This was the fountain across from Barter Theatre and it was a "Frozen Oasis" - it was a freezing night - temps were around 27 dgrees ... but beauty was found in the fountain.

5/25

I love to take the backroads because there is sooooo much mnore to be seen when you slow down and enjoy the view. I love country living cause - YES - I made Frankie stop in the middle of the road to take this and in the country - YES MA'AM you can OWN the road for a few minutes anyhow. I love the contrast of snow on the brown horse and I love how the one is looking like I was an interruption. Winter is here to stay ... NO SCHOOL for the kiddies tomorrow! Yippeeeee!

6/25

Ho - Ho - Ho ... Santa has a new ride ... well not really ... this is one of my favorite local decorations - it has been at the same spot for many many years ... I just love to see traditions and people who get into the Holiday spirit!

7/25

No one should get this excited over Hot Chocolate - I am a dork ... but I love LOVE love Hot Chocolate ... do you say Hot Cocoa - or Hot Chocolate ... I have NEVER said Cocoa in my life ... just a thought ... but I did find the most YUMMY French Vanilla mini marshmallows shaped like snowmen ... TOO GOOD!

8/25

I like to call this one ... Waiting on Santa ... even though they are just watching the snow ... I love it

Good Grief ...

I have too many blogs and I have neglected them all for TOO long ... so I have made a promise to myself that I am going to start Fresh - and new ... I am going to make a commitment to BLOG - and blog often. I have missed it so much and I hardly have time to breathe anymore - between the photography business, the jewelry business ... and oh YES - the mom business ... of all my businesses - I love the MOM business the most. My older boys just left to spend the weekend with their dad ... when they leave me for those 2 days, every other weekend, a piece of my heart goes missing and does not return until Sunday afternoon - when they are safe at home with me. The twins are sleeping and I need to get a move on ... we have to meet Frankie soon - to go to the company Christmas dinner. I am looking forward to some steak and big fat baked potato ... Yummm ... well this is my 1st of what I hope to be many - new and exciting blogs from "the southern drawl" ...
